nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) describes a range of conditions that affect people who drink little or no alcohol. The mildest type is simple fatty liver (steatosis), an accumulation of fat within the liver that usually causes no liver damage. A potentially more serious type, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is associated with liver-damaging inflammation and, sometimes, the formation of fibrous tissue. In some cases, this can progress to either cirrhosis, which causes progressive, irreversible liver scarring, or to liver cancer. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis can develop as a consequence of obesity and the metabolic syndrome. It is considered a "silent" disease, with most sufferers feeling well, in spite of inflammation and damage to the liver. But NASH can progress to cirrhosis in up to 20 percent of cases. With obesity becoming more prevalent in the U.S., the health care burden related to cirrhosis due to NASH is expected to rise. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease affects more women than men and is found in all age groups, including children. Most often, it's diagnosed in middle-aged people who are overweight or obese, and who may also have diabetes and elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels (hyperlipidemia). With the increasing incidence of obesity and diabetes in Western countries, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has become a growing problem. Although its true prevalence is unknown, some estimates suggest it may already affect as many as one-third of American adults. One of the liver's jobs is clearing germs from the blood. Occasionally, however, the germs get the upper hand. A chronic infection by the hepatitis C virus is the most common cause of nonalcoholic cirrhosis in the United States. In most cases, it takes many years for the infection to lead to scarring. In rare cases, chronic infections of hepatitis B can also lead to cirrhosis. The virus that causes hepatitis A never sticks around long enough to cause cirrhosis. Some people can trace cirrhosis to an overactive immune system. For unknown reasons, they produce antibodies that attack liver cells as if they were intruders. The liver becomes damaged and inflamed, a condition known as autoimmune hepatitis. A good way to protect and help your liver is to use Liver Combo from Nepatica. Read more!

what is hepatitis A?

The liver is located on the right side of the abdomen, just beneath the lower ribs. The liver performs many functions, including processing most of the nutrients absorbed from intestines, removing drugs, alcohol and other harmful substances from the bloodstream, and manufacturing bile — the greenish fluid stored in the gallbladder that helps digest fats. The liver also produces cholesterol, blood-clotting factors and certain other proteins. The liver has an amazing capacity for regeneration, it can heal itself by replacing or repairing injured cells. It's also constructed so that healthy cells will take over the function of damaged cells. Hepatitis A virus is one of six currently identified strains of viral hepatitis — the others are B, C, D, E and G. The strains differ in severity and in the way they spread. Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. Although not usually as serious as other types of viral hepatitis, hepatitis A causes inflammation that affects the liver’s ability to function. Hepatitis A virus is usually transmitted via the fecal-oral route. That means that someone with the virus handles the food you eat without first carefully washing his or her hands after using the toilet. You can also contract the virus by drinking contaminated water, eating raw shellfish from water polluted with sewage or being in close contact with a person who's infected — even if that person has no signs or symptoms. In fact, the disease is most contagious before signs and symptoms ever appear. Mild cases of hepatitis A don't require treatment, and most people who are infected recover completely with no permanent liver damage. Unlike hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A doesn't develop into chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis — both potentially fatal conditions. Practicing good hygiene — including washing your hands often — is one of the best ways to protect against hepatitis A. Effective vaccines are available for people who are most at risk. Some people may have hepatitis A and never develop signs or symptoms. Young children, especially, tend to have mild cases, but signs and symptoms in older children and adults are likely to be more severe. In general, you'll have the virus for up to one month its average incubation period before developing any problems. When signs and symptoms appear, they often come on suddenly, and you may mistake them for intestinal flu (gastroenteritis). Liver Combo with Milk Thistle (200 mg), Dandelion (200 mg), Licorice (50 mg), Nettle Leaf (50 mg) and Schisandra (50mg) is a powerful combination in order to protect the liver.

what is hepatitis?

Hepatitis means inflammation (itis) of the liver (hepar), an irritation or swelling of the liver cells. The different types of hepatitis are caused by different things, but they all produce inflammation of the liver. Viral hepatitis refers to several common diseases caused by viruses that attack the liver. The most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Hepatitis A is considered the least threatening since it generally does not lead to liver damage, and 99% of those infected fully recover. Hepatitis B is a serious viral disease that attacks the liver. Approximately 2-10% of adults and 25-80% of children under the age of 5 will not be able to clear the virus in six months and are considered to be chronically infected. Hepatitis C also causes inflammation of the liver, with an estimated 80% of those infected developing chronic hepatitis. Many can develop cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), and some may also develop liver cancer. Newly discovered forms of viral hepatitis also include hepatitis D, E, and G. Non-viral forms of hepatitis can be caused by toxic agents (drugs or chemicals), alcohol, or autoimmune processes. Another form of hepatitis is toxic hepatitis. Globally, it is estimated that around 250 million people are affected by hepatitis C. Moreover, an estimated 400 million people are chronic carriers of hepatitis B. Liver Combo with Milk Thistle (200 mg), Dandelion (200 mg), Licorice (50 mg), Nettle Leaf (50 mg) and Schisandra (50mg) is a powerful combination in order to protect the liver.

dandelion root helps the liver

Dandelion grows wild throughout much of the world and is cultivated in parts of Europe for medicinal uses. The nutrients in dandelion root mildly feed and stimulate the liver, making it a good preventative herb for our modern times, when the liver is put under so much stress from toxins around us. Studies of dandelion's beneficial effects on the liver have shown that the herb increases the production and flow of bile (a digestive aid) from the liver and gallbladder, it is an aid in liver congestion, hepatitis, gall bladder problems and formation of stones, and stimulates and promotes healthy bile. Dandelion roots good effects on the digestive tract make it an aid in food allergies. It is thought that the plant's positive effect on various liver functions is probably related to its high content of the B vitamin choline. Because it improves liver function, dandelion root (in combination with other liver-strengthening nutrients) may be effective for relieving the pain and other symptoms of endometriosis. It also enhances the ability of the liver to remove excess estrogen from the body, thereby helping to restore a healthy balance of hormones. Dandelion root together with Milk Thistle, Nettle Leaf, Schisandra and Licorice root forms Liver Combo from Nepatica.

diabetes and liver disease

In the article “Hepatobiliary Disease in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” written by Keith G. Tolman, MD; Vivian Fonseca, MD; Meng H. Tan, MD; and Anthony Dalpiaz, PharmD published here we learn that:“Diabetes mellitus is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States; 17 million people are affected. Liver disease is one of the leading causes of death in persons with type 2 diabetes. The standardized mortality rate for death from liver disease is greater than that for cardiovascular disease. The spectrum of liver disease in type 2 diabetes ranges from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The incidence of hepatitis C and acute liver failure is also increased. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is now considered part of the metabolic syndrome, and, with alcohol and hepatitis C, is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the United States.”
Badly controlled blood sugar increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead to scarring of the liver (nonalcoholic cirrhosis). Other medical conditions related to diabetes — such as high cholesterol also increase the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In addition, some medications used to treat these related conditions, such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, may cause liver damage. Liver Combo is a natural supplement with Milk Thistle (200 mg), Dandelion (200 mg), Licorice (50 mg), Nettle Leaf (50 mg) and Schizandra (50mg) in order to protect and take care of your liver.

milk thistle as a liver protector

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum ) has been used since Greco-Roman times as an herbal remedy for a variety of disorders, particularly liver problems. Studies shows that active substances in milk thistle (particularly silymarin) protect the liver from damage caused by viruses, toxins, alcohol, and certain drugs such as acetaminophen Milk thistle is useful for the prevention and/or treatment of various liver disorders including viral hepatitis, fatty liver associated with long term alcohol use, and liver damage from drugs and industrial toxins. The active ingredient in milk thistle is known as silymarin. This substance, which actually consists of a group of compounds called flavonolignands, helps repair liver cells damaged by alcohol and other toxic substances. Silymarin also keeps new liver cells from being destroyed by these same substances, reduces inflammation (important for people with liver inflammation or hepatitis).Milk Thistle is also a powerful antioxidant. Exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke, pollution from cars, sitting in the sun, taking certain drugs, or being under stress can all increase free radicals in the body. Milk Thistle protects the liver against harmful oxidation. Many over-the counter drugs and prescription medications can hurt the liver if taken in large doses or for long periods of time. Researchers have found that Milk Thistle can actually prevent or reduce medication induced liver damage. Liver Combo with Milk Thistle (200 mg), Dandelion (200 mg), Licorice (50 mg), Nettle Leaf (50 mg) and Schisandra (50mg) is a powerful blend for your liver.

fatty liver

Fatty liver is the build-up of excess fat in the liver cells. It is normal for the r liver to contain some fat, but if the fat weights more than 10% of the liver’s weight, it is called fatty liver. Fatty liver may cause no damage, but sometimes the excess fat leads to inflammation of the liver. This condition, known as steatohepatitis, cause liver harm. Sometimes, inflammation from a fatty liver is linked to alcohol abuse; this is called alcoholic steatohepatitis. Otherwise the condition is called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. An inflamed liver may become scarred and hardened over time. This condition, called cirrhosis, is serious and often leads to liver failure. Eating excess calories causes fat to build up in the liver. When the liver does not process and break down fats as it normally should, too much fat will accumulate. It is known that fat accumulates in the liver with a number of conditions. The most common is obesity. Fatty liver is also associated with diabetes, high blood triglycerides, and frequent use of alcohol. Fast weight loss and poor nutrition may also lead to fatty liver. Some people develop fatty liver even if they have none of these conditions. It is important to take good care of the liver. Liver Combo with Milk Thistle (200 mg), Dandelion (200 mg), Licorice (50 mg), Nettle Leaf (50 mg) and Schisandra (50mg) is a good natural solution.

facts about the liver and some useful herbs

The liver is the largest internal organ. It is located under the ribs on the right side of the abdomen. The liver is about the size of a football, weighs 3 to 4 pounds and performs more than 500 vital functions. The liver acts as a filter that removes waste products and toxins from the blood. It acts as storage for iron as well as some vitamins and minerals. It produces bile that aides in digestion and regulates levels of hormones, cholesterol and sugars. Everything we eat, drink, breathe and absorb through the skin eventually reaches the liver. Its 300 billion cells control a process called metabolism, in which the liver breaks down nutrients into usable byproducts. These byproducts are delivered to the rest of your body by the bloodstream. The liver also metabolizes toxins into byproducts that can be safely eliminated. Some of these byproducts are routed into the bloodstream and carried to the kidneys, which filter them so that they can be excreted in urine. Others are carried away by bile, a yellow or greenish fluid produced by the liver. These byproducts flow through bile ducts to the gallbladder and intestines so that they can be excreted in feces. Separating nutrients from waste is one of the liver's most important functions, but it is not the only function. The liver is also a storage depot for sugar (glucose), which is released when we need energy. It is very important to take good care of the liver.

Some useful herbs for the liver are:
Milk Thistle. The active and liver-protecting part in Milk thistle is called silymarin. Silymarin which consists of a group of compounds called flavonolignands, helps restore liver cells damaged by alcohol and other toxic substances. Silymarin also keeps new liver cells from being destroyed, reduces inflammation (important for people with liver inflammation or hepatitis), and has effective antioxidant effects. Milk thistle is also useful in the prevention and/or treatment of various liver problems including viral hepatitis, fatty liver associated with long term alcohol use, and liver damage from drugs and industrial toxins.
Dandelion root. Dandelion root contains a large number of nutritive salts that make it useful as an herbal remedy for a variety of conditions. The medicinal use of dandelion root dates back to tenth century Arabia, where it was used to treat liver conditions. Dandelion root stimulates bile secretion. The liver is the largest filter in the body. This self cleaning filter removes its debris by dumping it into the bile. The bile then flows into the intestinal tract and is eliminated in the stool. Therefore, the greater the bile flow, the greater the cleansing of the liver. The high choline content of the root is one ingredient which helps this tonifying effect. Dandelion root contains a bitter, milky juice that is thought to be capable of energizing the body. It also has properties that can detoxify the body and purify the blood.
Licorice root. Licorice root both protects the liver and promotes healing in this vital organ. The herb's anti-inflammatory properties help calm hepatitis-associated liver inflammation. Licorice also fights the virus commonly responsible for hepatitis and supplies valuable antioxidant compounds that help maintain the overall health of the liver. Licorice helps the body clear viral infections, and helps the liver to clean itself. When processed into glycyrrhetinic acid, Licorice root has a powerful anti-viral and anti-inflammatory effect which works to slow the deterioration of the liver and alleviate symptoms commonly associated with hepatitis.
Nettle Leaf. Nettle leaf functions as a health-building tonic partly because of its impressive nutritional profile: It’s rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, carotenoids, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Because nettle has diuretic properties, it also increases urination and helps to flush the urinary tract of organisms that contribute to infections. Nettle leaf is an excellent cleanser and aids the liver in its functions.
Schisandra. From the fruit of schisandra, seven active liver enzyme-lowering ingredients have been currently isolated. Schisandra fruit also contains various lignans, mainly schisandrins, which have been found to prevent liver damage, stimulate liver repair and preserve normal liver functioning. These properties appear to be related to the various anti-oxidant abilities of the schisandrins.
These herbs ( Milk Thistle (200 mg), Dandelion (200 mg), Licorice (50 mg), Nettle Leaf (50 mg) and Schisandra (50mg) ) together forms Liver Combo. Read more!

liver health and licorice root

According to the American Liver Foundation, more than 25 million American suffer from liver and gallbladder diseases. At present, there are few treatments that provide an effective change in these conditions, leaving many Americans to suffer, often, life threatening complications.
Because the liver is a vital organ to the human body, breaking down substances and working as a detoxification system, individuals who suffer from liver disease, such as hepatitis, may want to consider natural healing options. Licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) is a flavorful herb that has been used in food and medicinal remedies for thousands of years. Licorice root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to liver disease. Licorice grows wild in some parts of Europe and Asia. Licorice roots are brown on the outside and yellow on the inside. Licorice both protects the liver and promotes healing in this vital organ. When processed into glycyrrhetinic acid, Licorice root has a powerful anti-viral and anti-inflammatory effect which works to slow the deterioration of the liver and alleviate symptoms commonly associated with hepatitis.

nettle leaf and liver health

Stinging nettle is considered by many to be a pest, but the nettle has been used since ancient times as a source of food, fiber, and medicinal preparations. Nettle leaf is among the most valuable herbal remedies. Because of its many nutrients, stinging nettle is traditionally used as a spring tonic. It is a slow-acting nutritive herb that gently cleanses the body of metabolic wastes. It is one of the safest alternatives, especially in the treatment of chronic disorders that require long-term treatment. It has a gentle, stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, enhancing the excretion of wastes through the kidneys. Nettle leaf is an excellent cleanser and aids the liver in its functions.

schisandra and liver health

Schisandra is a woody vine native to eastern Asia. It winds around the trunks of trees, covering the branches. The white flowers produce small red berries. Traditionally, the berries are harvested in the fall, dried, and then ground to make the powdered medicinal herb. Schisandra, also known as wu-wei-wi and sometimes spelled with a “z” (Schizandra) has a long history of use in ancient Chinese medicine as an herb capable of promoting general well-being and enhancing vitality. From the fruit of schisandra, 7 active liver enzyme-lowering ingredients have been currently isolated. Schisandra fruit also contains various lignans, mainly schisandrins, which have been found to prevent liver damage, stimulate liver repair and preserve normal liver functioning. These properties appear to be related to the various anti-oxidant abilities of the schisandrins. Schisandra is one of the ingredients in Liver Combo from Nepatica.

more about cholesterol and the liver

Cholesterol is a fatty substance, also called a lipid, that is produced by the liver. It is also found in foods high in saturated fat, like fatty meats, egg yolks, shellfish, and whole-milk dairy products. The body needs cholesterol in order to function. It is a fundamental part of the structure and functioning of the cells, and it is also needed for the formation of various hormones. Cholesterol moves around the bloodstream packaged inside a protein called a lipoprotein. There are two different types of lipoprotein low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL carries cholesterol throughout the bloodstream as LDL-C, also known as "bad" cholesterol. If you have too much LDL–C in your bloodstream, it can become a danger to your health and can lead to potentially serious conditions. HDL carries cholesterol throughout the bloodstream as HDL-C, also known as "good" cholesterol because it helps return cholesterol to the liver, where it can be eliminated from the body. Cholesterol Combo from Nepatica will help you to maintain a healthy cholesterol level in a natural way. Cholesterol Combo contains Red Yeast Rice (200 mg), Garlic (100 mg), Guggul (100 mg), Apple Pectin (75 mg) and Cayenne (50mg). Each capsule in our Liver Combo contains 200 mg of Milk thistle.

the liver

The liver is our largest internal organ and only internal organ that will regenerate itself if part of it is damaged. Up to 25% of the liver can be removed, and within a short period of time, it will grow back to its original shape and size. The liver has many functions; one of them is the secretion of bile. Bile is stored in the gallbladder and released as needed for digestion. Bile is necessary for digestion of fats; it breaks fat down into soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and helps to assimilate calcium. In addition, bile converts beta-carotene into vitamin A. The liver also combines toxic substances such as metabolic waste products, insecticide residues, drugs, alcohol and other harmful chemicals with substances that are less toxic. These substances are then excreted via the kidneys and bowel function. The liver also breaks down hormones like adrenaline, aldosterone, estrogen and insulin after they have performed their needed actions.

It is very important to take good care of the liver. We have created Liver Combo with Milk Thistle (200 mg), Dandelion (200 mg), Licorice (50 mg), Nettle Leaf (50 mg) and Schisandra (50mg) in order to maintain a healthy liver function.
